I was reared on Disney movies.
I love, love, love them.
So it’s no surprise that I can find messages about the writing life within Disney lyrics.
How I felt at my first big writer’s conference:
All those days watching from the windows
All those years outside looking in
All that time never even knowing
Just how blind I’ve been
Now I’m here, blinking in the starlight
Now I’m here, suddenly I see
Standing here, it’s all so clear
I’m where I’m meant to be
-“I See the Light” from Tangled
The pep talk you have to give yourself when you feel like quitting:
I’m like a shooting star
I’ve come so far
I can’t go back
To where I used to be
-“A Whole New World” from Aladdin
The truth about using publication as your be all and end all and not enjoying the journey:
The seaweed is always greener
In somebody else’s lake
You dream about going up there
But that is a big mistake
Just look at the world around you
Right here on the ocean floor
Such wonderful things surround you
What more is you lookin’ for?
-“Under the Sea” from The Little Mermaid
Reassurance for your weary writer’s heart. Say it to yourself!
I’ll be there someday
I can go the distance
I will find my way
If I can be strong
I know every mile
Will be worth my while
When I got the distance
I’ll be right where I belong
-“I Can Go the Distance” from Hercules
Your Turn: What’s your favorite Disney movie? Did I leave any good examples out?
My favorite was Cinderella, but I love The Little Mermaid too.
Oh, this was fun … humming along …
Lion King…"Oh, I just can't wait to be king." Uh, Wendy, no. 😉 I like The Lion King though. And Tangled was all kinds of fun. My kids have a Tangled room.
~ Wendy
Tangled was one of my favorites. I just luuuv the attitude of that adorable horse! So cute, the way you applied the lyrics to writing. Happy weekend to you! 🙂
We just watched Sleeping Beauty over the weekend. I had the album/storybook when I was a kid so I memorized the songs.
As I watched it again, I realized how much the movie influenced me when writing The Dragon Forest.
I love the dragon at end!!
Am praying for your puppy!!
Oh! I hear that Hercules song a lot when I'm writing. I tend to listen to show tunes and that one I sing a long with;) HA! My favorite Disney is Beauty and the Beast. I love Belle. And that library Beast gives her. Sigh…
Hi Lindsay! I love, love your new website layout. Sorry I'm behind on checking it out!
This post is awesome! Like you, I was reared on Disney movies too. It seems like a whole slew of great ones came out when we were growing up. Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Alladin, Lion King, Pocahontas, Mulan, Toy Story, Tarzan, Hercules…gotta love the 90s. lol
Like Susan, I have a special place in my heart for "Beauty and the Beast" and I still have to work not to covet her library. I also remember dressing as Belle for Halloween when I was 9. My little bro was Batman.
I really love Tangled too. It's a new favorite for sure. My two-year-old niece and I dressed up as Rapunzel from Tangled for Trick o' Treat this week. I even carried a frying pan. ha. It was fun! I'll be posting a pic on my blog soon.
And it's interesting now looking back at how Disney movies affected my life. Growing up, they taught me to dream bigger and believe that the impossible could happen. Even though cartoons, I saw places around the world–castles, pyramids, etc–that I wanted to see someday…and I have.
God planted the dream in my heart to reach out to others with His Gospel and travel the world. He had a plan for me to fulfill it and continue the journey. Now I feel my ministry is to share about Him through connections with others using travel writing in my Christian novels and my blog (www.pensonaworldmap.com). Well keep up the good work, girl! ttyl
LOL! Love it!
I like Mary Poppins on constructive criticism. "Just a spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down…" It's amazing what a little sweetness on the positive side will do before laying the kabash on! lol
What a fun post, Lindsay! I'm with Jess. I like Mary Poppins and her sage counsel about sugar making the medicine go down. That's why I return edits to my CP filled with smile faces along with the suggestions so she knows what I like.
I love that your mind works this way! 🙂 Cinderella – another great one for when you want to give up:
"A dream is a wish your heart makes
When you're fast asleep
In dreams you lose your heartaches
Whatever you wish for, you keep
Have faith in your dreams and someday
Your rainbow will come smiling thru
No matter how your heart is grieving
If you keep on believing
the dream that you wish will come true"
