You know what I appreciate about the Bible?
It’s honest.
Especially the Psalms.
Think about it. David and others wrote so many Psalms that cry out to God. They don’t have answers…mostly just questions.
Questions like
- How can you let this happen, God?
- Why am I suffering unjustly?
- What do I have to do to return to your good graces?
- Will things ever be okay again?
- How can I trust?
The Psalms also express sorrow, heartache. The awesome thing about God is that we can bring our feelings to Him — and He listens. He cares.
The song “Worn” by Tenth Avenue North (listen below!) is an awesome reminder of that to me. Because it’s not a song about answers. It’s a song about plain old honesty and telling God, “I don’t know how to keep going on. I’m worn out. I need to see some sort of evidence here that it’ll all be okay. I need to know you’re going to fix this–maybe not in the way I want you to, but in the way that’s best.”
Simply put, it’s a cry from our spirits that tells God we need Him.
Your Turn: What’s your favorite Psalm and why?
Oooh, I don't know if I can pick a fave. I love when I'm having a stupid-attitude-type day, just sitting down and flipping to any psalm and just reading until I have my much-needed attitude adjustment. 🙂 I love how the writer always comes back to trust…the psalms are honest and heart-felt, but also many times, firm and full of resolve. Love it!
Yes! It's so helpful to know that the Psalms are full of questioning and pain, but that the best place to return to is trust.
Worn is one of my favorite songs. Sometimes I put it on repeat and I feel such comfort and peace in the words.

I'm with Melissa, it's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd have to go with Psalm 139. The assurance that He knit me, planned every day of my life and goes with me in the heights and depths bring about His peace that surpasses all understanding. LOVE.
LOVE Psalm 139!! There's something amazing about knowing that God understands and knows me even more than I do myself…and He loves me anyway.
LOVE. THIS. SONG. Just bought the CD a few months ago for the kids, but I love it too. 🙂 I'm with Donna. My all time favorite psalm is 139. But there are others that also speak to me: Psalm 84:5-7–promises that God brings us THROUGH the Valley of Baca (sorrow), Psalm 16 that reminds us of His faithfulness, and the inheritance God's given us. Psalm 3 for when I can't sleep at night. Oh, so many psalms.
