If you’ve hung around me for any length of time, you know that I’m a singer.
In short, I love music. And I’m pretty much always singing. I hear a phrase and often a song pops into my head–usually from a musical. Am I obsessed? Quite possibly. 🙂
Music has a way of drawing me close to the Lord. It’s often through worship when I find myself at my most vulnerable. For me, it is a deeper connection than any other.
But yesterday as I sat worshiping with hundreds of others in our church service, something else about music stood out to me.
I love harmony.
There is something hauntingly beautiful about two or more voices raised together in worship. There’s something even more gorgeous when those voices are harmonizing.
Perhaps it’s just my trained ear that relishes this sound so much, but I literally ache inside–in a good way–when I hear two voices in perfect harmony. I love it even more when mine is one of those voices.
Because it’s not just about hitting the right notes or blending a sound together. That’s beautiful too, but it’s just…deeper than that.
It’s just like God to create this wonder in nature–harmony–to weave together something that we can’t even fully grasp. What makes two notes harmonious? I don’t know if I could even explain it to you. But we know it when we hear it.
Maybe this is a stretch, but when I hear two or more voices in perfect harmony, it makes me think, “I want me and God to be like these voices.”
Perfectly in tune.
One the melody, paving the way–that’d be God–and one the harmony, following wherever the melody leads.
I love that God speaks to me through music.
I love that He draws me to Himself through music.
But even more, I love that He created harmony, so I know exactly how He and I fit together.
Your Turn: Does music speak to you like it speaks to me? What makes you feel closest to the Lord?

YES. I adore music and singing. I really, really do!!!!!
Sometimes silence makes me feel the closest to God though.
I do love music. Growing up taking piano lessons and singing in church, it's sort of a built in thing. 🙂 But I think one of the things that makes me feel closest to God is quiet time when I can focus. I'm so distractable, often even in church. But that quiet time first thing in the morning before I let the all the day's stuff distract me, that's when I tend to feel the closest to him. Now if I could just figure out how to transfer that into the rest of my day. 🙂
I'm a terrible singer, and I can't play a single instrument. But I love beautiful lyrics. I guess it's the writer in me.
Oh it does! It does! I can carry a tune, but I'm not a singer-not like you. Not like my husband. But I did play a trumpet and was in choir. lol
I'm not a singer, but I love music.
I feel closest to the Lord when I'm in nature. Hiking in the woods, birding, sky watching, or shelling on a beach…just to name a few.
One of my favorite C.S. Lewis quotes is: "In the process of being worshipped, God communicates His presence to men.” I'm right there with you and music. Put worship music in the ear buds and give me a path in the trees and I'm in heaven. Harmonies are such a beautiful representation of relationships. They move, flow and compliment each other in stunning avenues. And I cannot wait to hear Jesus himself singing over us: "The Lord your God is with you, the Mighty Warrior who saves. He will take great delight in you; in his love he will no longer rebuke you, but will rejoice over you with singing.” If I were a betting person, I'd say Jesus is a tenor. 🙂
Lindsay, I love harmony too, and I love to create them when I'm singing. 🙂 I love your thought about you and God being like harmonizing voices. Singing can sometimes bring me to tears when I ponder the lyrics of the song and what it says about God. I definitely feel close to Him when I'm singing. I also spending time with Him in quiet time, journaling, walking and being with others and watching Him "show up" in their lives.
