One of the coolest things I’ve ever experienced was riding a train in England.
There’s something so fun and different about this particular mode of travel. Maybe it’s the fact that you get to see the scenery in a way that you can’t when flying or driving. Let’s face it—when you’re flying, you only see clouds and far away plots of land, and when you’re driving, mostly you see other cars careening past you.
But on a train, there’s just openness. Land. Beauty.
You feel like you’re parting the wilderness and traveling where not many have gone. (Even if it’s not true, it’s how you FEEL.)
This weekend, I get to ride another train. In the northern Arizona town of Williams is a train that heads to the Grand Canyon. Since my aunt and grandma are in town, we’re taking a fun day trip.
I’m so excited to relish the scenery on the train and at our final destination.
And the company will be great, too!
What about you? Have you ever ridden a train? Did you like it? If not, do you think you’d like to take a train sometime? If so, where would you like to take one?
My mom wouldn't fly when we were kids so we always took the train to FL to see her folks. Have a blast this weekend. I've always wanted to see the Grand Canyon.

I don't think I even realized that there are so many trains in the United States! And I hate to admit it, but I've only been to the Grand Canyon once…and I was like 10 years old!
Yeah, I've ridden on a train…in London…and loved it! So fun! Once, I accidentally rode a train almost all the way to Brighton, when we only meant to go to one of London's outer zones. Hilarious. And fun. And oh such a good memory. 🙂
That's awesome! I've heard Brighton is the bomb. I took a train to Cambridge and it was ah-mazing!
I took Amtrak from Flagstaff to the middle of nowhere New Mexico, where we switched to a Greyhound bus. Unfortunately, the train broke down on the way home and it was a very long, unpleasant trip! I would take trains in England or for short trips, like Williams, but that experience really soured me on Amtrak!
Oh no, that's an awful experience! Yikes. That would sour me on Amtrak too.
I love trains, too! I've been on trains in England and France, and right here in Minnesota. I love watching the scenery outside, but also people watching inside, too.
Have fun on your weekend trip! I'd love to see the Grand Canyon someday. 🙂
People watching is always fun, no matter where you are! 😉 Great fodder for novels, yes?
I'd love to travel by train through Canada.
I might get to travel by train this summer from Slovakia to Poland. Can't wait!
Have fun this weekend!
Slovakia to Poland…that would rock!
I've been on a train a few times. The most recent was the "Thomas" ride with my kids though (not so sure that counts). I think its quite a romantic way to travel.
BTW, I was quite moved by your tribute to your mom. I know those things aren't easy to write but I'm sure it will bless as your mom's legacy still blesses you. Thinking of those who have lost their moms this Mother's Day.
Several people on facebook have mentioned this Thomas ride! Must be a hit. 😉 My nephews would love it!
And yes, trains remind me of Cary Grant movies. Oh so romantic!
Thank you for your thoughts and prayers! I'll be praying for you come Father's Day.
