One thing I love about God is how He’s always the same. He never changes.
But the way He shows Himself to me? Now THAT changes all the time.
I remember studying the names of God in junior high. We looked at all the names people in the Bible called God. They are mostly Hebrew names and they all point to the same God. But they focus on His different attributes.
Back then, I didn’t get it.
Now, I’m starting to.
Sometimes God speaks to us in a burning bush. Sometimes in a still small voice. It’s always the same God who speaks; He just uses different things to get our attention.
Sometimes God speaks to me in my fear, reminding me that He is my protector.
Sometimes He speaks to me in my loneliness, showing me that He is my friend and Daddy.
Sometimes He speaks to me in my hurt, and my Healer heals me.
So, since I didn’t “get it” in junior high, I want to look in depth at the names of God again. I want to chronicle ways that God has been so many things to me in so many different situations.
Same God. A variety of ways to speak to this fearful, lonely, sometimes broken girl.
Join me in the coming weeks as I explore the names of God and how He’s shown me Himself. I’d love to hear how He’s spoken to you too.
Your Turn: Have you ever studied the names of God? Which is your favorite? How is God speaking to you lately?
Jehovah jireh…the Lord who provides. Yes, studied them. Want to keep learning about them. I adore each of them in a specific way, but this one really resonate with me.

This is one of my favorites too, Wendy. He provides. Oh yes, He does.
Love this! I'm excited for your upcoming posts…hmm, I think one of my favorites is "Wonderful Counselor." (Does that count as a name of God?) Sometimes the littlest decisions trip me up and I have a feeling God is thinking, "Uh, hello, remember me – your counselor? I'm here ready to help if you'll just look to me rather than your silly pro/con lists. :)"
I think we are a lot alike, Mel! Ambitious…but sometimes to a fault, if we are charging ahead of God.
I have! I love Psalm 99:8 "I am the God-Who-Forgives." I'm really looking forward to these next weeks, Lindsay! Yay!
The amazing power of God's forgiveness cannot be overstated! Amen.
I love love that poster….how cool. The names of God is a great study.
Isn't it fun? I am looking forward to delving deeper for sure. Thanks for commenting!
Jehovah Nissi…The LORD my Banner!
He is victorious and as a result, now I am too! He is the banner over me.
We sang Jesus Messiah at church on Sunday and I always tear up when I sing or read the names of Christ in Scripture. So moving…so humbling.
Thanks for the reminder this morning!
Ooo, love that one. We are victors in Christ! Such power in His name.
Looking forward to this post series!
I love that God is the great I AM! Always current, always relevant no matter the date!
That one makes me tear up, TC. I AM is enough to describe him. How cool is that?
He has been my peace and my comfort too!! I love his names.
He has been mine as well, Jessica.
I had the wonderfully fun opportunity of team teaching "Lord, I Want to Know You," which is a study on the names of God. This was years ago — but the influence of the truths I learned still affects me today.
I'm hoping to learn a lot about him through these posts and inner contemplation and prayer!
I look forward to reading more in the coming weeks, Lindsay!
Thanks, Sarah! I'm looking forward to learning more as I go. 🙂
Timely post–the sermon last night was about The Son of Man and how Jesus called himself that so many times when he was alive. I agree with you about God speaking to us in different ways. I've found it true in my life, at least!
Me too, Jill. That's what inspired this series…I was just thinking of how God has been so many things to me at different times when I needed it. But he's still one God. I just love that!
I haven't done a specific study on the names of God. I'll stay tuned to see what you've got up your sleeve. 🙂
Thanks, Barb. 🙂 Hope you have a fabulous Thursday.
