For anyone who knows me, it’s no secret: I adore musicals.
I love watching them. I love singing along with them. I love dancing along with them. I love performing in them. Yep. I adore them.
I also adore writing.
So why not bring the two together?
Why not, indeed.
So, without further ado, here are some of my favorite musical lyrics applied to the writing life.

What to sing/shout from the rooftops when you don’t do well in a contest:
The sun’ll come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There’ll be sun!
Just thinkin’ about
Tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs,
And the sorrow
‘Til there’s none!

A good thing for a critique partner to remember:

A good thing for a critique partner to remember:
Just a spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down
In a most delightful way

The attitude to have when an agent rejects your query:
And nobody in all of Oz
No wizard (ahem…agent) that there is or was
Is ever gonna bring me down!

And finally, the mantra to repeat when you feel like giving up:
Climb every mountain
Ford every stream
Follow every rainbow
‘Till you find your dream

Your Turn: If you’re a writer, any musical lyrics that have inspired you on your writing journey? And anyone, what’s your favorite musical?
I LOVE THIS POST. 🙂 I think we're soul sisters!! I adore musicals. I was actually a musical theater major once upon a time– had Broadway dreams. While God put me on a different path, I still perform in my living room quite frequently to standing room only audiences.
Soul sisters, indeed. Will you be at ACFW? If so, I see some singing together in our future… 😛
Hooray! I've found a fellow musical lover! I have many, MANY favorites, but Fiddler on the Roof is at the top of my long list. Oh how I love the character of Tevye!
P.S. What a cute Rizzo! 😉
Yay!! I love Fiddler. Tradition! Tradition!
This is a blast, Linds! Love it!!
I love musicals, too. I adore the Barbra Streisand version of Hello Dolly. (The stage version is great, too, but for some reason, I like the Streisand ending better.) Love Sound of Music, Oklahoma, pretty much anything Rogers & Hammerstein ever created. Yeah, love it all.
And I'm cheating here, because this isn't a lyric, but it is a quote I love from Hello Dolly:
Cornelius Hackl: I've lost everything: my job, my future, everything people *think* is important, but I don't care – because even if I have to dig ditches for the rest of my life, I shall be a ditch-digger who once had a wonderful day.
I want to be like that…taking joy in one simple happy day.
Yay, I love all of those too!! Hello Dolly is ah-mazing.
Yay, such a good quote. 🙂
I Love musicals! I have so many fav's: 7 brides for 7 brothers. The Music Man, Calamity Jane…I could go on and on. Cute post! Love the look!!
Yes, yes, yes on 7 Brides…LOVE that one. And Music Man. Haven't seen Calamity Jane, though! Will have to check it out!!
Love this!
My mom sang musicals all the time around our house.
Here's one for my writing friends from Oliver "I'd do anything for you dear, anything…"
~ Wendy
Aw, and we'd do anything for you too, Wendy. 🙂
"Peopple…people who need people…are the luckiest people in the world!"
I'm not a big musical fanatic, but those lyrics came to my mind after reading your post! Ha ha!
Sound of Music is my ALL time favorite. I had to have a long veil for my wedding day just because of Maria. Sigh.
Thanks for the fun trip down memory lane!
Ruth! You're missing out!! 🙂
That's so cool about Maria's veil. It WAS beautiful, for sure. Sigh.
LOL!!!! You are adorable as Rizzo! I love musical, if only JAWS was a musical. 🙂
Mary Poppins is one of my all time favs! Too funny, friend!
Ha! If JAWS was a musical, I just might watch it.
I am a total musical dork.
Urinetown is one of my favorites – very clever, and, well, "it's not a happy musical".
Inspiration? In Sondheim's Company, the song Being Alive. The character is talking about relationships, but I can totally see that struggle being applied to writing. 🙂
I actually haven't seen either of those; I tend toward the "happier" musicals, but Sondheim's music is extraordinary, for sure. Thanks so much for stopping by. 🙂
You nailed it! Encore!!!! 🙂
I just might encore this. Maybe next time I'll vlog and sing some of the songs. You never know… 😛
Love this!
Climb Every Mountain has always been a biggie on my inspirational song list!
Fun stuff!
It's so good, isn't it?! Thanks for stopping by, Loree.
How fun, Lindsay! Those lyrics are so appropriate. And what a fun picture of you! I wish I could see you on stage. 🙂
Thanks, Sarah! I love being on stage…I'm hoping to audition for a musical at a local theater this fall. We'll see…
Hi lindsay, love this post. I'm a musical theater nerd too. I practically grew up on stage. My favorite show was also my first, must be sentimental about it. Joseph and the amazing technicolor dreamcoat. 🙂
Hi, Amy! Ooo, that's a good show. My first real musical was Man of La Mancha. I was in the chorus, and I have lots of awesome pictures of me with dirty-looking clothes and ratted-out hair (if you haven't seen the show, it takes place in a prison during the Spanish Inquisition).
Funny thing: My daughter and I were singing "The sun will come out tomorrow!" at the top of our lungs today as I drove around town doing errands!
And Wicked? One of my all-time favorite musicals!
Can we come up with something for "I'm gonna wash that man right out of my hair" from South Pacific?
"I'm gonna wash that ….."
Fill in the blank:
rejection letter?
bad scene?
lousy 15 minute appointment?
And I love you as Rizzo!
Yes, all awesome options!! Or how about doubt, fear, and negativity? Those work too. 🙂
Ooooh. From the darker side, Moulin Rouge. The music is incredible and who would have thought Nicole and Ewen could sing?
Come what may, come what may, I will love you until my dying day!
But my favorite is Nicole's song on the elephant: One day I'll fly away, leave all this to yesterday. Why live life from dream to dream and dread the day when dreaming ends?
And because I'm still an 80's girl and I think Bryan Adams still has it, Spirit: Stallion of the Cimmaron, the animated movie from Dreamworks. Bryan did all the music for it and it's amazing! Does that count?
Moulin Rouge DOES have beautiful music. Haunting, but beautiful.
And I've never seen Spirit, but sure, we'll give it to ya! 🙂
Thanks for stopping by, Becky!
I am a huge musical fan, as well. Hands down my all time favorite is Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – I think I told you that I was married in June because of the song "June Brides" and I had seven bridesmaids! As a surprise they performed the "June Bride" song for me during our reception! It was one of my all time favorite moments in life.
I love anything with Doris Day, Gene Kelly, Debbie Reynolds and Judy Garland to name a few. Meet Me in St. Louis, Summerstock, Brigadoon, Singing in the Rain, the list goes on and on. I also love all the Rogers and Hammerstein musicals. I've seen Les Miserables on stage twice (once in Minneapolis and once in London) and I was in South Pacific in high school. Good memories!
That is such a fun story about your wedding!! I love that song. Les Mis is soooo good. I've seen it twice as well. It never gets old.
